T.c. pinnatus
15-16” long. Big, bulky birds. They do best in undisturbed open grassland. Today’s current situation where the native grassland is mixed with crops has some negative impacts on the populations.
Prairie chickens are a spooky bird to work with in captivity compared to the forest grouse, but they are an amazing bird to watch display in the spring and quite possible are the most popular game bird in captivity today.
We feed Mazuri maintenance pellets, fresh-cut dandelions, and cut up cranberries coated with Vionate powder. They eat limited amounts of Douglas fir bows.
Production: 12-15 per clutch average the may contiue laying
up to about 30 eggs.
I recommend working with the Prairie chicken. They will do well in hot climates if properly shaded
