Canada Spruce Grouse
(208) 253-4694
D.c. canace
15-17” long. Fairly small birds, sometimes known as the fool hen. They live in lowland areas on the edges of black spruce bogs with jack pine and larch trees. In summer they feed heavily on blueberries (and their leaves), cranberries, and raspberries. As fall comes, they tend to favor the yellowing larch needle switching to jack pine as winter approaches.

The Canada spruce grouse tail is about 20% smaller than that of a Franklin and has orange tail bands (otherwise known as red tails). The Canada spruce grouse are incredibly fun to work with as are the Franklin, but require good husbandry.

We feed Mazuri maintenance pellets, and we offer plenty of jack pine bows to them. We give them cut up cranberries coated with Vionate mineral powder.

Production: 5-8 eggs average per clutch average
14 is the most we have gotten from 1 hen

They do not respond well to hot climates. They prefer to live in a cooler climate unless you make indoor arrangements for them in the heat of the summer.
